"You have the opportunity to save lives in your community." This week's blog touches more on how naloxone can save lives by reversing an overdose by opioid use, and how naloxone will now be available over-the-counter in pharmacies without the need for a prescription. C-WHO Has Just Been Awarded the I-PPOSS (Idaho Pregnant and Parenting Opioid Support System) Grant!

developing a nursing and peer support consultation service for rural and frontier primary care sites across the state
creating a rural primary care/critical access learning collaborative focused on perinatal OUD
and more!
Life Support is Back! New Look, More Guests, More Topics
We missed all of you over our summer break, but we're back and ready to keep providing important information on topics across the healthcare continuum.
This week Our Host Rachel Blanton sits with Jason Bienert to discuss what xylazine is and how it relates to opioid use, why it's important for communities to be aware of xylazine, and the different pathways of those intentionally using xylazine and unintentionally using xylazine.
Life Support will have new episodes every other Thursday, and you can also see the rest of our past episodes anywhere you get your podcasts!
Two grants, The Idaho Rural Opioid Prevention and Pharmacy Education Stewardship (I-ROPPES) grant and The Rural Emergent Alternative Surgical Opioid Non-use (rEASON) grant have come together with the common mission of spreading the word about opioid prevention programs, practices, and resources.
Check out our great xylazine and naloxone resources!
DHW is still in negotiations with first responders to operate the DHW naloxone distribution program (formally operated by Idaho Harm Reduction Project). We are hopeful to be able to use DHW funding to purchase naloxone again by the end of the year. Below are some resources where you may be able to get free naloxone or purchase naloxone while DHW is reworking our distribution program.
Get free naloxone
Direct Relief – Free naloxone (injectable and sometimes nasal) for eligible organizations such as community health centers, free clinics, harm reduction agencies, and public health departments. Apply for assistance at https://www.directrelief.org/apply/
Ask Idaho Harm Reduction Project – IHRP may have some injectable naloxone from Direct Relief to share with other organizations. Call or e-mail Kimberly at [email protected]
Ask your local health department – Some health departments are using opioid settlement funds to purchase and distribute naloxone to community partners. Contact the Drug Overdose Prevention Health Educator at your health department to see what is available.
Ask your local police department – Police departments likely have expired naloxone that can be redistributed to community partners. Expired naloxone has been shown to work beyond the expiration date, learn more here. “Some naloxone is better than no naloxone.”
Purchase naloxone (HB350 prevents reimbursement through a DHW subgrant unless you are a first responder agency)
Remedy Alliance – Low cost naloxone is available to harm reduction organizations, learn more and apply at https://remedyallianceftp.org/pages/apply. A medical provider license number is not required to obtain naloxone from Remedy Alliance.
Emergent BioSolutions (EBS) – Purchase Narcan nasal spray direct from the manufacture. See below for updated pricing and availably information. A medical provider license number is required to place an order. To order contact our EBS representative Miae Aramori at [email protected]
Telehealth Awareness week is coming up!
The American Telemedicine Association's (ATA) 3rd annual Telehealth Awareness Week, taking place September 17-23, 2023, will showcase the many ways virtual care improves access to quality healthcare services for all communities.
During the week, the ATA invites telehealth solution providers, hospital systems and medical practices, patient advocacy leaders, policymakers, and other stakeholders to highlight the need to establish an omnichannel care model that includes in-person and virtual care.
